Pantry Palooza

The Service and Outreach Committee has organized a “Pantry Palooza” to assist Abiding Missions, City Mission, and Blessings in a Backpack.  We are asking that you prayerfully consider donating food items to these worthy causes. There are containers in the church narthex (lobby) for each of these organizations. All donations will be promptly delivered.

Abiding Missions

Abiding Missions has been serving Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood for more than ten years. Abiding Missions has had a huge impact on the Allentown neighborhood, providing ministries that strengthen the community while supporting individuals and families. Their ministries include a Food Pantry, After School, Adult Breakfast Fellowship, and a Community Choir. Monetary donations can be sent to Abiding Missions, 731 Excelsior St, Pittsburgh, PA 15210.

Needed in their Food Pantry are:
  • Canned soups (pull tab cans preferred)
  • Canned prepared meals (Spaghetti Os, etc.)
  • Chef Boyardee meals

City Mission

The City Mission has opportunities for kitchen helpers on weekdays/nights and weekends. If anyone is interested, they should contact Samantha Carroll, volunteer coordinator at the Mission at [email protected].   Any questions may be directed to Keith Mason at 412–965–6592.

Are you looking for a service project that you can do from the comfort of your home? If so, consider making a meal for the homeless sheltered at the City Mission. Containers and recipes (if needed) are available in the church narthex (on the shelf next to the Lost and Found box). You prepare a meal for the size container and bring it to the church’s kitchen freezer. We will then deliver it to the City Mission. For information about the City Mission and other ways to help, visit their website.

The Samaritan Care Center food pantry needs are:
  • Pasta and pasta sauces
  • Canned fruits/vegetables
  • Cereals
To see the shelter needs list, click here. Donations can be placed in the appropriate bins in the church narthex. Clothing and shoe donations can be placed in the bin in the parking lot.
City Mission Volunteers Needed
The City Mission is in need of more volunteers in their warehouse to sort items during the week between the hours of 9:30AM-3PM as well as a few consistent volunteers who are able to lift heavy donations in some of their thrift stores. These opportunities are not listed on their website; you will need to reach out to Sam Vannest, Manager of Volunteers Services if you are interested.

City Mission Corners of Your Fields

Our Redeemer has joined with City Mission in a program called Corners of Your Fields. For those of you who donate to the City Mission, this is an excellent way to support those in need. Our Redeemer will get points for items dropped off at the stores. When you donate, advise the Mission staff that you want the points to go to Our Redeemer’s account. Points will be converted to gift cards quarterly and sent to the church. They can be used at any of the seven thrift stores. Gift cards earned will then be given to either City Mission residents or other people in need.

Meals on Wheels of Peters Township

Meals on Wheels of Peters Township delivers meals to senior citizens in Peters, Canonsburg, Houston, Lawrence, Finleyville, and parts of Eighty Four, Bridgeville/S. Fayette, Bethel Park, and Upper St. Clair. They currently serve up to 160 clients every weekday and can easily sign you up to receive meals over the phone.

The only requirement for meal service is having trouble shopping or cooking. Meals are delivered Monday through Friday between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm. They offer hot regular or diabetic meals consisting of soup, entrée, salad, dessert, and milk. They add no salt to their food and can accommodate some special needs as well. They make much of their food from scratch and strive to serve a healthy, attractive meal.

To learn more about receiving meals or volunteering, call 724-969-1000, email or visit their website!
